Causes of Infertility

Infertility is usually defined as the inability to conceive or become pregnant after a year of trying.  This parameter shifts to 6 months if the woman is older than 35 years.

Natural conception depends upon many factors including:

  • A woman being able to produce a mature egg from one of her ovaries.
  • The egg successfully passing through the fallopian tube (organ which connects ovaries to the uterus).
  • A man producing enough good quality sperm, to swim up the fallopian tube, “meet” the egg and successfully fertilise it.
  • The fertilised embryo implanting onto the uterus wall, where it then develops into a foetus.

Fertility Screening

During your first visit, the doctor will require a thorough medical history followed by an examination which may include tests, to assess your fertility potential.

Some of the common tests that may be performed include:

  • Ovulation Test – This test checks that an egg is being released every month.
  • Ovarian Reserve Test – This test is the best predictor of female fertility as it checks both the quality and quantity of eggs left in the ovaries. It is carried out using a transvaginal ultrasound scan and blood tests.

The Ultrasound scan also enables the doctor to examine the womb and ovaries carefully to check for abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids and ovarian cysts.  These tests are normally arranged / carried out during your initial consultation.

  • Tubal Patency Test – This test is carried out through an X-Ray and assesses the condition of the fallopian tubes and uterine cavity. This ensures that the fallopian tubes are not blocked.
  • Semen Analysis – This allows for assessment of the man’s sperm. Here, the factors that are examined are sperm count, sperm motility (swimming ability), sperm morphology (sperm shape and appearance) and the presence, if any, of sperm antibodies.
